The Department of Psychiatry in the Spencer Fox Eccles School of Medicine and the Huntsman Mental Health Institute (HMHI) at the University of Utah seeks an exceptional academic leader to serve as the next Chair of Psychiatry. This is a distinctive opportunity for a forward thinking, collaborative, and visionary leader to guide a nationally recognized department during a transformative period marked by growth, innovation, and expanding impact across clinical care, research, education, and community engagement.


The Chair of Psychiatry will work closely with the Dean of the School of Medicine, leadership across HMHI, and senior executives within University of Utah Health to foster an environment that promotes clinical excellence, advances scientific discovery, strengthens educational programs, and enhances the wellbeing of the communities served. As a key institutional leader, the Chair will play a central role in shaping the future of mental health care, education, and research across the university.


In partnership with department faculty, HMHI leadership, and interdisciplinary colleagues across campus, the Chair will be charged with articulating and executing a unified strategic vision that integrates the department’s robust clinical enterprise, diverse research portfolio, and comprehensive training programs. This includes strengthening research infrastructure, expanding translational and clinical science, advancing innovative models of patient care, and fostering cross disciplinary initiatives focused on population mental health and whole person care.


The ideal candidate will be an inspirational, strategic leader who promotes collaboration, transparency, and institutional stewardship across University of Utah Health and the University of Utah. They will champion a culture of inclusion and psychological safety, support faculty development and retention, and cultivate strong relationships with philanthropic partners, particularly the Huntsman Foundation, to advance shared priorities that elevate the department’s mission and national reputation.


Competitive candidates will bring a track record of achievement as an academic psychiatrist, including excellence in clinical care, substantial contributions to psychiatric research, national visibility, experience securing extramural funding, and progressive administrative leadership within an academic medical center.
