Association for Academic Psychiatry (AAP)

Chair of the JABSOM Department of Psychiatry and Chief of the Behavioral Health Clinical Program at the Queen’s University Medical Group

12/15/2025

We are seeking an experienced and innovative individual to serve in dual leadership roles to ensure better and brighter futures for patients and families experiencing mental and behavioral health challenges across the state of Hawaiʻi, many of whom face social drivers that can impede their full potential. The University of Hawaiʻi, John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM), Department of Psychiatry strives to eliminate health disparities among Indigenous Hawaiian, Asian, and Pacific Island populations, as well as address the public mental health needs of severely mentally ill, rural and remote populations within our Pacific Island home. Its community-focused research, scholarship, and quality improvement is guided by the Native Hawaiian value of Lōkahi, where being servant-leaders helps establish partnerships and teams that seek to achieve balance or harmony. Behavioral Health Services at The Queen’s Health Systems provides comprehensive, compassionate, evidence-based psychiatric care to children, adolescents, and adults throughout Hawaiʻi and the Pacific Rim, through living the Queen Emma Way, where CARE is the foundation. JABSOM psychiatry faculty are also an essential part of the care team working to create a healthier Hawaiʻi within Hawaiʻi Pacific Health at Kapiʻolani Medical Center for Women and Children and Straub Benioff Medical Center.

Within this diverse state and matrixed organization, JABSOM is seeking an Associate or Full Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the University of Hawai‘i John A. Burns School of Medicine, who will concurrently serve as the Queen’s University Medical Group (QUMG) Chief of Behavioral Health. The JABSOM is a community-based medical school with numerous clinical affiliates across our island state. Psychiatry training occurs within the Queen’s Health System, at Kapiolani Medical Center for Women and Children, and across a larger network of clinics across the state, including the State Department of Health and mental health clinics on the neighbor islands, via in-person and telehealth visits.

Applicants must meet the qualifications to serve as a Medical School Department Chair at UH JABSOM and be able to hold a concurrent position as the QUMG Chief of Behavioral Health. More details are in the JABSOM job posting.

If you are a health systems-focused leader with demonstrated, effective academic-health system collaborations that improve and deliver the highest quality health care, please consider joining us in our commitment to improving the health of Hawai‘i’s people. About the organization:

The John A. Burns School of Medicine (JABSOM) is a community-based school and is affiliated with a strong network of clinical training sites throughout the state. We are one of the most culturally and ethnically diverse medical schools in the country, and our problem-based learning curriculum, Learning Communities, community-based medicine programs, and clinical instruction expose medical students and resident physicians to a diverse range of patients and health systems in our state. We are intent on expanding medical student and residency education to the neighbor islands to have our communities teach our future physicians and help address our critical physician shortages. Our learners participate in interprofessional education in pre-clinical and clinical settings. Our researchers collaborate with other health professionals and scientists from other University of Hawaiʻi Mānoa schools and colleges, across the University of Hawaiʻi System, and with colleagues across the state, the nation, and the world. The School strives to build on its historical role in expanding opportunities for women, minorities, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islanders, and the socio-economically disadvantaged. Equity, inclusivity, capacity building, and strong partnerships with key stakeholders committed to achieving health equity remain significant focus areas for our JABSOM ʻohana. We welcome you to join our collective efforts to transform medical and healthcare education, research, and care delivery in Hawaiʻi as part of JABSOM’s kuleana - responsibility and privilege - and vision of ALOHA: Attain Lasting Optimal Health for All.
