Chair of Psychiatry, MaineHealth Maine Medical Center and
Chief Medical Officer, MaineHealth Behavioral Health

Portland, Maine

MaineHealth Behavioral Healthcare and MaineHealth Maine Medical Center are the largest integrated behavioral health organization and the top tertiary care hospital in Maine, respectively. This system is backed by a comprehensive range of inpatient and community mental health services and plays a vital role within the integrated MaineHealth system. They are currently looking for a new Chief Medical Officer for MaineHealth Behavioral Health and Chair of Psychiatry at MaineHealth Maine Medical Center to succeed the long-serving incumbent, who will retire in January 2025.

The Opportunity
The Chair of Psychiatry at MaineHealth Maine Medical Center and Chief Medical Officer of MaineHealth Behavioral Health position offers a fantastic opportunity for a physician executive with strong relationship-building skills, a proven ability to drive priorities in behavioral healthcare, and a keen interest in advancing educational and research programs within one of the nation’s most innovative and advanced behavioral health systems.

The Department Chair will oversee and lead the clinical, teaching, and research initiatives of the Department of Psychiatry at Maine Medical Center in Portland. This includes oversight of residency and fellowship training in general and child psychiatry, as well as the academic partnership with Tufts University School of Medicine. The role also encompasses supervision of specialized treatment and research programs, including the Developmental Disorders Program at the Glickman Lauder Center of Excellence.

The CMO role is strongly supported by a new operating model and is responsible for the overall clinical operations of Behavioral Health Services, including the 100-bed Spring Harbor Hospital, as well as psychiatric services throughout the MaineHealth system.

The Ideal Candidate
The successful candidate will have successful and progressive leadership experience in a Medical Director, Division Chief, Associate Chair or Chair role gained within a major teaching hospital or academic medical center environment, ideally as part of an integrated delivery system and/or within the context of a larger health system with a strong academic infrastructure. There is a preference for prior direct experience within both inpatient and community mental health settings. This leader should be academically eligible for Associate Professor or Professor faculty appointment at the Tufts University School of Medicine. MD/DO degree or equivalent, and appropriate Board Certification are requirements.

The Organization
A division of MaineHealth, MaineHealth Behavioral Health was established in 2014 through the merger of several highly respected and well-established behavioral healthcare organizations in Maine. This includes Spring Harbor Hospital, the only nonprofit psychiatric hospital in southern Maine with 100 beds, along with four community mental health agencies. Previously, these providers operated under a passive parent model, but today, MaineHealth Behavioral Health stands as the largest behavioral health service provider in the state. With locations in southern, western, and mid-coast Maine, it offers a comprehensive continuum of care, committed to creating a seamless system of behavioral healthcare. This includes coordinating hospital psychiatric care with community-based treatment services and enhancing access to medical care through integration with primary care services. MaineHealth is the largest healthcare system in northern New England. With $3.8B in net revenues, a solid financial foundation, and new leadership in place since 2023, the organization is prioritizing thoughtful integration for its wide range of inpatient and outpatient services across the region.

The Region
Portland, Maine, is recognized as one of the nation’s premier small port cities. Its unspoiled landscapes, stunning vistas, outdoor activities, and excellent shopping attract many visitors. As the largest city in the state and a commercial hub, Portland is conveniently served by a national airport and Amtrak and is just about 90 minutes from Boston. The city offers a range of high-quality private and public educational options, along with diverse and affordable housing.
